The kids are on vacation and as an adult you are very busy. But investing time in your child is never a bad idea so here are some little things you can do to develop a range of important skills.
MEASURING & SCIENCE
Seems obvious to us but for young children, it’s not. Ask questions about what is heavier. (An orange or a grape?) What is longer? (this stick, or that one?) Older kids can answer questions such as “Should we measure the size of the car in miles, feet or inches?” or “Does it take us seconds, minutes or hours to get us to the store?”

READING
Draw or print out pictures of a story they are familiar with on several pieces of smallish paper. Have your child put the pictures in the correct order to tell the story. For older kids, this can be done with sentence summaries you create of the storyline so they practice reading and putting things in the correct order.
SINGING & MEMORY
Take turns singing parts of a song that both of you know. For example: Parent sings "ABCDE" then stops and the child picks up the song and sings "FGHIJ"….back and forth until the song is done.

COUNTING & VOCABULARY
Count the eggs in a carton and teach your child that 12 is also called a Dozen. Older children can also learn about 10 years being a Decade and 100 years a Century.
WRITING
Have your child write a list of what they have enjoyed so far this summer!
