“The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library.” Albert Einstein
Hopefully you have a card already, but if not, you are in luck! September is National Get a Library Card Month and most of the local libraries are offering little gifts for kids who get a card. Adults and children are encouraged to get library cards during this month so while you are there, get them for the whole family.

Wondering what you need one for? Library cards are great because they allow you access to a whole lot of stuff!
- Books and magazines (Of course!)
- Movies and music
- Toys and puzzles
- Telescopes and science kits
- Children’s activity kits
- Adult book club kits
- Culture Passes so you can visit museums for free
- Plus access to many online resources
For kids, library cards can be a tool for teaching responsibility. They will need to keep track of their card, take care of the items they check out, and make sure to return them by their due dates. Having their own card will make them feel very important and “grown up”.

For adults, library cards are your ticket to saving money. The average price of a children’s book is $10-$15. Since you want them to read, and would get multiple books over the course of a year, that could really start to add up! Don’t forget to factor in the savings from checking out movies, music, activity kits …. all of which the library has for FREE. A library card will have you saving on your education AND entertainment budget before you know it.
So far we’ve been talking about what the library can do for you, but you can also do things for the library! Both the Surprise Regional Library and Peoria’s Sunrise Mountain Library have book stores run by Friends of the Library. These book stores would be happy to receive donations of gently used books and DVDs your family no longer needs. Proceeds are used to support local literacy programs.
