At first glance it’s just another pleasant little shopping center. There’s a Bashas (love their produce prices), a fast food restaurant, and a martial arts place. But take a few more steps around the corner to the left and you will strike gold! Because that’s where you will find Spencer’s Place, a local coffee shop that’s doing serious good in this world.
Their Menu
Spencer’s Place has a wide, seasonally changing menu. They serve coffees, teas, and little bites of deliciousness. On my most recent visit, seasonal specialty drinks were all given fun names that tied in with football season. I ordered a delicious mocha and pistachio coffee concoction which I would highly recommend. It came with two smiles! One from the server and another drizzled on my drink in chocolate. How's that for friendly! They also have a corner dedicated to locally made gift and specialty items that is fun to browse and support.
Their Ambiance
It’s warm and welcoming with both indoor and outdoor seating available. Staff is friendly and helpful, tables are clean, and it’s nicely decorated to almost feel like a cozy family room. There’s dedicated community counter space where businesses and interested customers can connect. Spencer's Place hopes you will linger! Water and cups are readily available for customers who have long since finished their purchased drink. There is also a little cubby well provisioned with games and activities to enjoy with family or friends. If you've got work or school to take care of, they've got you covered with a Print With Me printer in the corner you can utilize.
Their Purpose
So far, this sounds like any lovely neighborhood coffee shop, right? Well, here’s where they really stand out. They employ adults with cognitive disabilities. They also have a close tie with the non-profit Employed and Overjoyed (https://employedandoverjoyed.org/). Spencer’s Place has a meaningful purpose each and every day. This is why it’s worth going a little out of your way to support this business. They want to help unemployed adults who have intellectual or developmental disabilities. They do this by providing “a job experience that will bring them a new sense of empowerment and honor.” Thank you Spencer’s Place for helping everyone who so desires, to be able to work and contribute to their community.
